After leaving molecular biology, Derek worked with street kids in Central America before joining the Canadian foreign service. He now writes science fiction full time in Gatineau, Québec. His short fiction has appeared in major magazines like Analog, Clarkesworld, and Asimov’s, and numerous year’s best anthologies.
