Can*Con Aurora 2019

Hello all!

Thank you all so very much for the Aurora Award nomination, for our fifth year in a row! As some of you may know, my co-chair, Derek Künsken, is currently somewhere in the world that is not here.

Ergo, I have invited his programming leads, Brandon Crilly and Evan May, to help me draft this blog post.

(From the Programming Leads: We’re here to make sure Marie doesn’t do or say anything the rest of us are going to regret. Or anything that involves glitter.)

First off, this convention is only possible thanks to the great people who support it. That includes our con team, our guests of honour, our panelists, our attendees, our venue, and all of your willingness to make it glittery and fun.

So, thank you!

(You had us up until “glittery and fun,” Marie.)

This year is even more super duper special because we’ll be hosting the Aurora Awards!

It’s going to be a party! Saturday night (October 19), be there. We’re going to share details later, but we’re thinking that there will be glitter, environmentally-friendly decorations and lots of jokes. I have begun preparations on most of those items. Derek will be in charge of jokes.

(Programming will upload jokes to Derek.)

This year is also special for Can*Con, because it’s our tenth-year anniversary since our reboot! We are eternally grateful for Farrell McGovern, Jim Botte and Caycee Price for trusting Derek and I with their amazing con. We will add extra partying to an existing party to note said milestone.

(We’re not sure how you can have party on top of partying, but we’re sure there’s an algorithm somewhere that explains this.)

We can’t wait to share many more years with you, and are grateful for all of your enthusiasm and support these past few years. As we continue to grow, we will endeavour to keep being a community con that you can all be proud to call your own.

To all Aurora nominees, we congratulate on this wonderful honour, and hope you’ll join us in Ottawa. We’ll send you details in the weeks to come as we finalize them!

I’m sure Derek will be just as excited as I am to welcome you to Ottawa and encourage you to celebrate Ottawa and Canadian accomplishments via fun and joy.

(We can confirm that Derek feels appropriate levels of excitement.)

Thank you all again, and we look forward to seeing you in October!
